What is different
Cobots are designed to work beside people with limited force and speed. Industrial robots run faster and carry more, but normally operate behind guarding.
Choose a cobot when
- Volumes are low or product mix is high
- Speed is not critical
- Payload is light to moderate
- Space is limited or the robot must be moved between tasks
- You want quick deployment by your own staff
Choose an industrial robot when
- Cycle time is critical
- Parts are heavy
- Volumes are high and stable
- The process is hazardous (welding sparks, laser, painting)
A note on safety
A cobot arm can still be dangerous with a sharp tool or heavy part. A risk assessment is always required. See our robot safety guide.
