MIG vs TIG vs Laser Welding Robots: Which Process Should You Automate?

Each welding process has strengths. Here is how they compare when a robot does the welding.

MIG/MAG

The workhorse of robotic welding. MIG/MAG is fast, tolerant of fit-up variation and suitable for steel, stainless and aluminium in a wide thickness range. It is the most common process in general fabrication.

TIG

TIG gives excellent quality and appearance, particularly for stainless steel, thin sections and critical joints. It is slower than MIG, so it is chosen where quality outweighs speed.

Laser

Laser welding is very fast with low heat input and minimal distortion, but needs accurate fit-up and a laser-safe enclosure. It is excellent for thin materials, battery components and precision parts.
