Palletizing Robot Selection Guide: Payload, Reach, Speed and Gripper

Follow this checklist to specify the right palletizing robot before requesting quotations.

1. Product and load

Record the weight, dimensions and packaging of each product (box, bag, crate). Decide whether the robot lifts single items or full layers.

2. Throughput

Calculate required cycles per minute from the line speed. Layer picking lowers the number of cycles needed, allowing a smaller robot.

3. Payload and reach

Payload must cover product plus gripper. Reach must cover the pick point, the farthest pallet position and the required stack height with a margin.

4. Gripper

  • Vacuum for cartons with a flat top
  • Clamp or fork for crates and bags
  • Layer gripper for whole layers
  • Mixed gripper for multiple product types

5. Layout and safety

Choose between single-pallet, two-pallet and multi-line layouts. Add light curtains or scanners so operators can change full pallets while the robot is running.

6. Software

Look for a pattern generator with weight-limit checks and easy recipe changes. Good software reduces operator training time.
